FOR UK OWNERS WITH £2M+ BEHIND THEM, OR £250K+ A YEAR COMING IN

You don't have a financial problem. You have a structure problem.

You're doing well. The business works and the family's fine. But nobody's looking at the whole thing. Your accountant knows accounts, your solicitor knows documents, your adviser knows products. The families who keep the most, and keep control, hold it differently.

THE PROBLEM

Tax on taking it out, selling and passing it on can run into £500k to £5m+.

Taking it out.

Taxed in the company, taxed again on its way to you, then often put straight back into property or the next venture. It sat with you for a week and cost you for the privilege.

Selling.

Sold in your own name, the whole gain is taxed at once, on the buyer's clock.

Passing it on.

Up to 40% when it moves to your children, landing in the worst year of their lives.

No plan.

Four advisers, each good at their part, and nobody joining it up.

Not through anything you did wrong. Just because nobody joined it up.

THE HARDER QUESTION

Tax is the easy part.

The harder question is what happens on the worst day.

If you died tomorrow, who decides?

If the marriage ended, what happens to the business?

If a buyer rang next month, would you be ready?

If one of the kids divorced, who gets their shares?

Most owners can't answer in five seconds. Set up properly, every one of these has an answer, written down, before you ever need it.

None of this is gloomy. It's what lets you stop thinking about it, and get back to building.

So let's cover the worst days first. Then the good part: what you'd build.

OWN NOTHING. CONTROL EVERYTHING.

The structure wealthy families have used for generations, built for you to run yourself.

The say.

A family company sits above everything you own, and you hold the votes. You decide everything, exactly as you do today.

The trading side.

Your businesses sit underneath, running as they do now. Where it qualifies, the family company can sell one without tax on the gain. Detailed trading and shareholding conditions apply.

The investment side.

Money the businesses don't need moves up and goes to work there, away from the trading risk, before anyone takes it out personally.

The family.

With the right ownership set up in advance, future growth can sit outside your estate, while you keep the vote. Trusts are used only where they serve a real family purpose. Only the say passes on, when you choose.

Nothing hidden, nothing discounted.

Every pound has a named owner and a written purpose. Nothing is valued down to make it disappear. That's what makes it easy to understand, easy to run, and easy to defend.

A family investment company is a room. This is the house.

What is a self-administered family office?

A STRUCTURE OF ONE

Three kinds of law, built into one structure.

The wealthiest families pay for a full-time family office: their own private team of lawyers, tax experts and investment managers, often costing six figures a year, whose only job is looking after the family’s money. This is the same idea, built so you can run it yourself.

Three kinds of law, normally kept apart

Commercial law: how your companies are set up and how they deal with each other.

Contract law: the written agreements that say who owns what, and what happens if something changes.

Trust law: how wealth is held for your family, safely, for the long term.

What a family office adds

The family’s rules: who decides what, and how, written down so nothing depends on anyone’s memory.

Each company’s rules: what each company can and can’t do, to separate trading risk from the family’s money.

A plan: where the money goes next, and when.

Most advice uses one piece at a time: a holding company here, a trust there. Putting them together is why it reaches outcomes ordinary advice can’t.

The self-administered family office is ours: designed by our team, and built for you to run.

Nothing here is new. Family companies and trusts have worked for wealthy families for over a hundred years. We build it at your size.

REAL EXAMPLES

What it looks like for real families.

The farmer.

His farm trading business was moved into its own company, with the land held separately. Over three years, about £3m of growth has already built up outside his personal estate, with the future growth going to a trust for the family.

The portfolio landlord.

A large property portfolio, set up so investors can buy into it. He can step back for a couple of years without running it day to day, and without losing control of his assets.

Sold in his own name.

He sold his company for around £16m, in his own name, and left talking to us until after the sale. Set up first, around £3–4m of tax on the sale might not have needed paying.

A buyer was waiting.

Six months of meetings, and nothing had moved. Two days to map it, three months to build it, and the sale went through his family company.

The financial advisers.

Two advisers, one running an investment management business and one a wills practice, set up their own businesses ahead of a sale, and their property portfolios for when it passes to their families. Now they introduce their own clients.

The tech founder.

He missed the chance on his first exit by not being set up. Now his next ventures are being structured before they grow, so the gains land where he wants them.

Careful.

“I want to know it's safe before anything moves.”

Is it safe?

Know it all.

“Isn't this just a family investment company?”

Why it isn't

Adviser or accountant.

“What's in it for me and my clients?”

REAL CASES

Everyone shows you their wins. Here are three I lost.

Sold for £16m in his own name, after six months of talking.

£3–4m in tax that might not have needed paying.

Ready in December.

A buyer came a week later. He took the offer and paid the full tax on the gain.

We found him a way out of millions of debt.

He wanted to think about it. Six months later, the banks had the property.

None of them were careless. All of them thought there'd be time.

Alex Byrne, Keep Capital

I'm Alex Byrne. I'll tell you within a week whether your business is set up right.

I'm 27, and I'm Head of Northern Ireland at Mural Crown. My dad has been a financial adviser for 42 years, and I learned this sitting in the room with the specialists, then answering the questions myself. I've sat with owners from £2m to £80m. The team I build with has set up more than 100 families, alongside a City law firm of barristers and solicitors with over 60 years behind it.

"Thank you for getting straight to the point, and not sending me on a six-month goose chase." (What clients say most.)

60+ owners reviewed · 25+ set up properly · 12 sent straight back to their own accountant · £0 earned from those 12

In Northern Ireland, everyone knows everyone. My name is on every case I bring to the table. That's why I'd rather lose a fee than get one wrong.

My own family is in this structure. I ran it to learn it.

Your accountant, solicitor and adviser are the trades. I'm the one who draws the house. Mural Crown builds it, with a City law firm. Your trades still work in it.

"If you and your dad weren't structured this way yourselves, I wouldn't have joined."

"How do you know what you don't know? The Case Review showed me more about what's possible with what I've built than forty-plus years as a financial adviser."

Built with barristers. Inside the UK system.

Everything is ordinary UK company law, built with barristers and your accountant in the room. Where HMRC will confirm a step in advance, we ask first. Private isn't hidden: the taxman sees all of it, and your neighbours see nothing they don't need to. And if your only aim is to get one over on the system, we won't work well together.
